Electric vs Gas Dirt Bikes: Which Should You Buy?

For most riders who mainly trail ride, practice, or ride private land, an electric dirt bike is the better buy: it is quieter, has no clutch or shifting, and skips oil, valve, and carburetor service. A gas dirt bike still makes more sense for long remote rides where you can't recharge, or if you want to refuel in minutes.

We sell electric dirt bikes and service both electric and gas bikes at our West Jordan shop, so this guide compares the two from the repair bench as well as the showroom. Prices and specs below come from bikes currently listed on our store.

What's the real difference between electric and gas dirt bikes?

An electric dirt bike uses a battery and motor with a single-speed drive. A gas dirt bike uses a 2-stroke or 4-stroke engine, a clutch, and a gearbox. That one difference drives everything else: noise, maintenance, how power comes on, and how far you can go before stopping.

Factor Electric dirt bike Gas dirt bike
Controls Twist throttle, no clutch or shifting Clutch, gears, and throttle
Power delivery Torque available immediately from a stop Power builds with RPM
Noise Quiet motor and drivetrain noise Loud exhaust
Routine engine service None (no oil, valves, or carb) Oil and fluid service, valve adjustments, carburetor service, top-end rebuilds
Refill time Recharge (the Rerode R1 page lists 4 hours) Refuel in minutes
Shared wear items Tires, brakes, chain, suspension Tires, brakes, chain, suspension
Labor rate at our shop $95 per hour $125 per hour

Is an electric dirt bike cheaper to own than a gas one?

Usually, on maintenance. Our service center menu shows why: gas off-road bikes add fluid service, valve adjustments, carburetor servicing, and top-end and complete rebuilds that an electric bike never needs. Both still need tires, brakes, wheels, and suspension work.

  • Electric labor: $95 per hour for e-motos and electric dirt bikes.
  • Gas labor: $125 per hour for off-road motorcycles, dirt bikes, and engine rebuilds.
  • The electric cost you can't skip: the battery. Replacement packs are a real expense; for example, the 74V 40Ah battery for the RFN Warrior SX-E15 lists at $1,197 on our store. Store and charge it correctly to make it last.

Which is faster, electric or gas?

It depends on the bike, not the fuel. Electric bikes feel quicker off the line because torque is there immediately. Current electric bikes on our store list these top speeds:

Bike Price Power Top speed Battery
Valtinsu EM-5 Ultra $2,199 8,000W peak 56 mph 72V 25Ah
RFN Warrior SX-E8 (youth/65cc class) $3,599 8kW peak 53 mph 60V 2,100Wh
Rerode R1 $3,850 10kW 55 mph 72V 35Ah
Rerode R1+ $4,250 17kW peak 59 mph 72V 40Ah

A full-size gas motocross bike will still out-run these on a long, fast track. For trails, tight terrain, and learning, most riders won't use the extra top end.

Who should still buy a gas dirt bike?

  1. Long remote rides: if you ride all day far from power, a fuel can beats a charger.
  2. Racing in gas classes: many race classes and tracks are still built around gas bikes.
  3. Riders who want to wrench: gas engines are well understood and parts are widely available.

Who should buy an electric dirt bike?

  1. New riders: no clutch, and ride modes on many bikes let you limit power while learning.
  2. Riders with neighbors: lower noise makes private-land and backyard riding easier.
  3. Riders who want less maintenance: no oil changes, valve checks, or carb cleaning.
  4. Youth riders moving up: bikes like the RFN SX-E8 are built to replace a gas 65cc.

Electric vs gas dirt bike FAQ

Are electric dirt bikes as good as gas?

For trail riding, practice, and private land, yes for most riders. Gas still wins on refill time and long-range remote riding.

Do electric dirt bikes need maintenance?

Yes, but less. Tires, brakes, chain, suspension, and battery care still matter. There is no oil, valve, or carburetor service.

Are electric dirt bikes street legal?

Most off-road e-motos are not street legal as sold. Check your state's rules; in Utah, see our Utah electric dirt bike laws guide.

Can BHive Moto service my gas dirt bike?

Yes. Gas dirt bikes are $125 per hour at our West Jordan shop. Call (385) 237-3341, Monday–Friday, 9AM–7PM.
