Winter Riding in Utah: How to Prep & Protect Your Electric Moto

Utah’s winter can be epic for adventure—but it’s also tough on electric motorcycles, e-bikes, and trikes.  At BHive Moto Shop, we get a lot of questions this time of year about how to keep your ride running strong (and safe) when the temps drop.

Here’s your go-to guide for prepping and protecting your electric moto this winter.

1. Battery Care: Keep the Power Flowing

  • Charge indoors: Bring your battery inside to charge, especially if temps drop below freezing at night.

  • Store partially charged: If you’re not riding for weeks, store at 50–70% charge—not full or empty.

  • Avoid deep discharges: Cold weather drains batteries faster; recharge after every ride.

  • Pro tip: Never leave your battery in a freezing garage or shed—extreme cold can shorten its life.

2. Tire Tips: Grip and Safety

  • Check tire pressure weekly: Cold air lowers pressure, which affects traction and range.

  • Consider winter tires: For frequent snow/ice, all-weather tires boost safety.

  • Inspect tread: Worn tires + winter roads = sketchy handling.  Swap them if needed.

3. Brakes & Controls: Don’t Skimp on Stopping Power

  • Test brakes before every ride: Wet, salty roads can reduce brake performance.

  • Clean and lube cables/levers: Prevents freezing and keeps controls smooth.

  • Rinse off salt: Salt and slush corrode metal fast—quick rinse after each ride helps.

4. Visibility & Gear: See and Be Seen

  • Bright lights: Shorter days mean more night riding—upgrade to high-output lights if needed.

  • Reflective gear: Add reflective tape to bikes, helmets, and bags.

  • Layer up: Waterproof gloves, thermal liners, and weatherproof jackets make winter rides way more enjoyable.

5. Storage & Maintenance: Keep It Ready

  • Cover your bike/trike:  Use a weatherproof cover if storing outside.

  • Schedule a winter checkup:  Our service center can inspect brakes, battery, tires, and electronics.

  • Keep it clean:  Mud, salt, and grime build up fast in winter—regular cleaning keeps your ride looking and performing its best.

Ride All Year—With Confidence

Winter doesn’t have to mean parking your electric ride. With the right prep, you can keep exploring, commuting, or just having fun.
