To store an electric dirt bike or e-bike for a Utah winter, clean and dry it, take the battery off if you can, and keep the battery somewhere dry, indoors and not freezing, at a partial charge rather than full or empty. Bosch eBike Systems, for example, recommends storing its batteries at 30-60% charge at room temperature. Your bike's owner's manual is the final word for your pack.
Updated November 2026
Every spring we see bikes that sat in a cold garage all winter with a dead or damaged battery. Most of that is avoidable with about 30 minutes of prep in November. This guide covers storage. If you plan to keep riding through the cold, our winter riding in Utah guide covers that side.

Why does winter storage matter so much for electric bikes?
The battery is the most expensive part of the bike and the most sensitive to temperature. Bosch calls it "the most sensitive component of the eBike" and notes it can lose capacity at low temperatures (Bosch eBike, winter guide). Replacement packs are not cheap. On our own catalog, a Rerode R1 battery is $1,500, an R1+ battery is $1,600, and a HappyRun G70 battery starts at $379.
- Cold: lithium-ion cells deliver less power in the cold and should not be charged below freezing.
- Charge level: sitting at 100% or near 0% for months is harder on a pack than sitting partly charged.
- Moisture: melting snow and road salt on a bike in a garage can get into connectors and onto bare metal.
What charge level should you store the battery at?
Store it partly charged, not full and not empty. The most widely published manufacturer guidance comes from Bosch, which recommends storing at a 30-60% charge level for longer periods (Bosch eBike help center). Its battery guide adds that fully charging or fully discharging puts higher load on the battery.
- Check your manual: Bosch's numbers apply to Bosch packs. Rerode, RFN, HappyRun, Freego, GhostCat and Eunorau each publish their own instructions. Follow your manual where it differs.
- Do not leave it on the charger: Bosch advises disconnecting the battery and charger from power after charging.
- Check it during the winter: look at the display or charge indicator every few weeks. If it has dropped noticeably, bring it back up into the storage range.
How cold is too cold for a stored battery?
Keep the battery out of freezing temperatures. Bosch recommends storing between 32°F (0°C) and 68°F (20°C) in a dry environment, or 50-68°F in a humid one (Bosch, 12 questions about the eBike battery). Bosch also says its batteries only charge between 0°C and 40°C, and recommends bringing a cold battery up to room temperature before charging or riding.
| Where you store | Bike frame | Removable battery | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heated garage | Good | Good if dry and not freezing | Best all-around setup |
| Unheated garage | Fine, covered | Bring it inside | Most common in the Salt Lake Valley |
| Basement or utility room | Good if you can get it there | Good | Bosch notes cool basements beat warm living spaces |
| Carport or shed | Covered only | Bring it inside | Bosch says to remove the battery here |
| Outside | Avoid | Never | Snow, salt and freeze-thaw are hard on everything |
Fire safety matters too. Bosch recommends storing batteries in a well-ventilated room with a working smoke detector, away from heat sources and flammable materials.
How do you prep the bike itself for storage?
Give it a full clean and a once-over before it goes into the corner. This is also the best time to catch worn parts, because shops are slower in winter than in March.
- Clean and dry: wash off mud and salt, avoid high-pressure spray on electrical parts, and let it dry fully.
- Chain or belt: clean and lube the chain so it does not rust. Check belt tension on belt-drive bikes.
- Tires: set pressure to spec and, if you can, get the bike on a stand so the tires are not sitting in one spot all winter. The A.T.S adjustable magnetic motocross stand is $159.99.
- Cover: use a breathable cover. We carry a HappyRun waterproof e-bike cover for $39.
- Connectors: keep battery terminals and charge ports clean and dry. Do not tape them shut while wet.
- Key switch off: make sure the bike is fully powered down so nothing drains the pack.
What if your battery doesn't come out?
Some bikes have batteries that are hard or impractical to pull. In that case, store the whole bike somewhere that stays above freezing if you can, bring the charge into your manual's storage range, and switch it fully off. If the only option is an unheated garage, keep the bike off the concrete, under a cover, and check the charge level more often. Before charging, let the bike warm up to room temperature.
What should you do before the first spring ride?
Do not just charge and send it. A few minutes of checks prevent the most common spring breakdowns.
- Warm the battery first: let it reach room temperature, then charge it fully with the original charger.
- Brakes: check pads, lever feel and for any fluid weeping.
- Tires and spokes: set pressure and check spoke tension on moto-style wheels.
- Bolts: run a quick torque check on axles, bars and footpegs.

Frequently asked questions
Should I store my e-bike battery fully charged for winter?
No. Most guidance says not to store a lithium-ion battery fully charged or fully empty. Bosch recommends 30-60% for its batteries, and your manual should have the number for your pack.
Can I leave my electric dirt bike in an unheated Utah garage?
Yes, you can leave the bike there, but take the battery inside if it comes out. Bosch recommends storing batteries above freezing in a dry room with a smoke detector.
Should I leave the battery on the charger all winter?
No. Bosch advises disconnecting the battery and charger from power after charging. Check the charge every few weeks and top it back up into the storage range.
Can I charge a cold battery?
No, let it warm to room temperature first. Bosch batteries only charge between 0°C and 40°C, and Bosch recommends charging at room temperature.
